Since 2005, the Namur public reading network, recognized by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB), has united municipal and private libraries. The Flawinne library, integrated into this network, offers Namur residents privileged access to a rich array of readings and activities. With a single card, users can borrow and return items across all libraries in the provincial Tire-Lire network and the FWB.
Originally a parish library founded by Gilbert Pierlot in a small premises on rue Marcel Vandy, it relocated in 2005 to the former 'Boys' School' at rue Vandervelde 8, driven by the Comité Animation de Flawinne. In 2009, its catalogue was computerized and integrated into the Namur network, enhancing access to its collections.
Beyond lending books for children, youth, and adults, the Flawinne Library serves as a vibrant community space. It regularly hosts events such as storytelling sessions for younger children on certain Wednesdays, book clubs for literature enthusiasts, and school activities for neighboring schools every Thursday morning.
A particularly appreciated initiative is the seed library (grainothèque), a participatory project dedicated to exchanging free and reproducible seeds. Anyone can deposit or take seeds for flowers, vegetables, or aromatic herbs to cultivate in their own garden.
To mark this anniversary, a special weekend celebration is scheduled for November 21 and 22, 2026, open to everyone. More information is available on the City of Namur's website.
