Do you have a garden and a few days to dedicate to nature? The Viroin-Hermeton Natural Park is actively seeking new participants for the Operation Hedgehog. This citizen science project aims to improve our knowledge of hedgehog presence in the region. The Park provides camera traps free of charge to volunteers: simply install them in your garden to discover nocturnal visitors!
Since May, residents of the area have been participating in this initiative deployed across the Natural Parks of Wallonia. The objective is clear: to increase observations to better understand hedgehog distribution and, ultimately, to promote their presence in our landscapes.
The hedgehog, a familiar but declining neighbor, has been classified as 'near threatened' on the IUCN Red List in 2024. Its populations are decreasing in several European countries due to habitat fragmentation, road traffic, pesticide use, the disappearance of hedges and natural shelters, and certain garden landscaping practices. Understanding where they still exist is therefore crucial.
Participating in Operation Hedgehog does not require being a naturalist expert. The Natural Park lends the equipment and provides simple instructions for setting up the camera trap. The device automatically triggers when an animal passes in front of the lens, allowing valuable data to be collected without disturbing wildlife or requiring prolonged surveillance.
The experience is also fun, as it reveals the small fauna that frequents our gardens at night. Beyond the hedgehog, other discreet species may be captured by the lens, offering a new perspective on local biodiversity. Taking an interest in the hedgehog encourages reflection on how our gardens can serve as a refuge and corridor for various wild species.
Four months after its launch, the operation aims to expand its observations across the Natural Park's territory. Individuals with gardens are invited to join this free initiative, which contributes to a concrete scientific project, provides equipment, and offers the chance to discover unexpected visitors.
