Invisible and odorless, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate in homes, posing a health risk as the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The only way to know its concentration is to perform a test.
Certain areas of the Province of Namur are more exposed due to their subsoil composition, but all homes can be affected. Radon concentration can vary significantly from one house to another, even between neighboring buildings.
To measure radon concentration, a detector must be ordered from www.actionradon.be. Orders are accepted from October 1st to the end of December. The detector should be placed in the home for three months during the heating season, then returned for laboratory analysis.
If the analysis reveals a high concentration, solutions exist. The SAMI – Service d’Analyse des Milieux Intérieurs of the Province of Namur can provide advice on appropriate measures, such as improving ventilation, sealing radon entry points, or installing a suitable ventilation system.
To order your detector and determine the radon concentration in your home, visit www.actionradon.be between October 1st and the end of December. A few months are sufficient to assess the situation and receive guidance on necessary actions.
For any questions about radon, the SAMI of the Province of Namur is available via email at sami@province.namur.be or by phone at 081 77 52 94 – 081 77 57 63.
More information is available at www.actionradon.be and afcn.fgov.be/fr/radon. This awareness campaign is conducted in collaboration with the Province of Namur and the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC).
