Maxi, much more than just a canine presence, is tasked with providing comfort, calm, and support to those who need it, including police officers dealing with difficult situations. His presence aims to create a more serene and reassuring environment, particularly for victims of traumatic events, violence, or children who need to be interviewed as part of a procedure.
Thanks to his calm and benevolent demeanor, Maxi helps reduce stress, build trust, and facilitate emotional expression. His presence is also considered particularly beneficial for supporting minors and allowing them to have a more positive memory of their visit to a police station. Several trials conducted in other Belgian police zones have already demonstrated the positive effects of this type of support for victims.
Trained for two years by the non-profit organization Os’mose, which specializes in assistance dog training, Maxi was selected for his balanced temperament and sociability. He will primarily be involved in victim support, supervised by the zone's social worker and a principal inspector. His presence will always be offered with respect for the wishes of the individuals concerned and adapted to each situation.
Maxi's well-being is a priority. He will live daily with the two staff members who supervise him, benefiting from his 'family life' after work, breaks during his days, and vacation periods where he can rest with his family. His health and development will be key points of attention.
This initiative aligns with the SamSom Police Zone's commitment to placing people at the heart of its missions and offering an increasingly adapted reception for victims' needs. Maxi serves as a complementary tool to the work of police officers and specialized interveners.
