To address the proliferation of the raccoon, an invasive exotic species, the City of Andenne is providing adapted capture cages to its residents.

To mitigate the negative impacts of the raccoon, an invasive exotic species, on biodiversity, public health, and the economy, the City of Andenne is making adapted capture cages available to its citizens. These management measures can be implemented by owners or managers of properties where the presence of this animal is noted.
Trapping can be done by individuals using a non-lethal cage or by mandating a competent person. All interventions must comply with animal welfare regulations, particularly the Decree of the Walloon Government of September 15, 2022. Cage loans are organized by the municipal technical service, located at the communal garage, rue André Renard 3, in Seilles. Appointments can be made at +3285844386.
A loan agreement must be signed by the borrower, outlining safety instructions and usage obligations. As raccoons are omnivores, various baits can be used, but it is recommended to avoid fish and meat baits to prevent attracting other native wildlife or domestic animals. Cages must be checked promptly to avoid unnecessary stress to captured animals.
If an animal is captured and euthanasia is chosen, it must be performed quickly and humanely, preferably at the capture site, by a qualified person in accordance with current regulations. Alternatively, euthanasia can be performed by a veterinarian, with costs borne by the applicant. Transport of the animal should be minimized, and the cage handled with care.
The City of Andenne also reminds residents that feeding raccoons, like all wild animals, is prohibited. This measure aims to prevent their congregation and spread, and to maintain public tranquility, sanitation, and safety.
