Every year, the Province of Luxembourg alerts the public to the little-known but very real risk of radon. A new awareness and detection campaign for this gas is being launched. Radon accumulates in buildings, especially when rooms are poorly ventilated, particularly in autumn and winter.
This radioactive gas can enter your home and concentrate there. It is recognized as the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. In Nassogne, over 90% of homes have never been tested, even though the risk, while seemingly low, is very real.
Data indicates that radon concentrations have exceeded the European standard of 300 Bq/m³ in nearly 9% of tested homes. Extrapolating these figures to the municipal level, approximately 185 homes in Nassogne may have excessively high radon levels without knowing it.
It is strongly recommended to measure radon levels at home using a small detector. This device, to be placed in the living area for 3 months, costs €20 including analysis. It allows you to know the concentration to which you are exposed.
A satisfactory result will bring you peace of mind. Otherwise, the Province will advise you on the generally simple and inexpensive measures to take to remedy the situation.
Detectors can be ordered until December 31, 2026. For more information and to order, contact 084/310 503, email samilux@province.luwembourg.be, or visit www.actionradon.be. Further information is also available at https://www.province.luxembourg.be/vivre/sante/radon.
