The site of the former Société générale coopérative in Soumagne, which hosted various industrial activities between 1920 and 1997, is entering a new phase of transformation. After housing a shoe factory, soap and polish production, food products, a forge, a tin workshop, a mechanical maintenance workshop, and a glassworks, the site had been disused since 1997.
Soil investigations conducted by SPAQUE between October 2023 and April 2025 revealed pollution from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, mainly around the buildings. A total volume of 660 m³ of contaminated soil will be excavated and transported to approved treatment centers. Landscaping works, including access roads, parking areas, and green zones, are also underway.
A second phase of work is planned for later to clean up the soil beneath a partially occupied building. These interventions are part of a larger renovation project aimed at centralizing all of Soumagne's municipal services on this single site.
This project exemplifies public-public partnerships between SPAQUE, local authorities, and with the support of the Walloon Region.
