Cat sterilization is a legal obligation in Wallonia, aimed at curbing feline overpopulation. However, abandonment and uncontrolled reproduction continue to fuel the stray cat population. To address this issue, the Municipality of Orp-Jauche is mobilizing through a dedicated community plan.
This plan is based on three main pillars: the implementation of a community sterilization program, the free loan of capture cages to citizens against a deposit, and the offer of logistical assistance for trapping, transport to the designated veterinarian, recovery, and release of the cats.
Citizens encountering stray cats are encouraged to report the situation to the Municipality. They can then borrow capture equipment. If capture or transport proves difficult, the Municipality offers assistance with these steps.
Sterilization is presented as the most effective way to sustainably limit births, stabilize stray cat colonies, reduce disease spread, alleviate animal suffering, and lessen the pressure on local biodiversity.
The Municipality also encourages the feeding of stray cats, viewing it as a benevolent act that facilitates their capture and sterilization. Residents are asked to report the presence of these animals.
With the end of the breeding season approaching, the Municipality emphasizes that now is the ideal time to plan sterilizations, allowing these procedures to be carried out calmly without endangering young kittens.
Together, let's act responsibly for the well-being of cats and to limit the feline population in our territory!
